Planning Team Supports Implementation of Article 4 Direction in Snowshill by Wiktoria Frej
The Planning Team at One Legal has recently supported Tewkesbury Borough Council in the implementation of an Article 4 Direction, which will come into effect on 1 October 2025. This Direction will introduce new restrictions on certain permitted development rights within Snowshill, a picturesque village nestled in the heart of Cotswolds and known for its scenic beauty and historic character.

What is an Article 4 Direction?
Article 4 Directions derive their authority from Article 4 of The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015. They empower local authorities to withdraw or restrict specific permitted development rights within designated areas.
Where an Article 4 Direction is in operation, property owners are required to obtain planning permission for types of development that would otherwise be permitted. Failure to comply with an Article 4 Direction, such as undertaking restricted works without the necessary consent, may result in enforcement action by the local planning authority.
It is important to note that Article 4 Directions do not prohibit development. Instead, they remove specific permitted development rights, thereby requiring property owners to submit a formal planning application to the local authority for consideration before undertaking certain types of work.
Snowshill Article 4 Direction
Following its approval by both the Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Planning Committee and Full Council, the Article 4 Direction for Snowshill will come into effect on 1 October 2025. The Direction will apply to a specifically designated area, as indicated by the dashed red boundary shown below.
